The most romantic thing I've done on Valentine's Day was to have my husband take me to Barnes and Noble bookstore.
ReplyDeleteYou're probably wondering what could possibly be romantic about that, because that's exactly what I was thinking as we drove to the store.
We arrived and he escorted me into the store and went straight to the section where they sell calendars, day planners, journals, etc. He scanned the shelves in silence until finally, he grabbed a black leather, spiral bound book. On the cover was a black and white picture taken on a beach, of a heart drawn in the sand and the words "Love Letters" written above the heart. The break of a wave threatening to wash the writing away.
He turned around and handed the book to me, and right there in the aisle said, "this is our book". He said, "I don't always get to tell you what I'm thinking or feeling." (He works nights and I work days so we often miss each other altogether; or he may be sleeping when I leave, and vice versa). He said;
"I woke up and turned over the other morning, and watched you get dressed. I was thinking God, she's beautiful, that's MY wife. I Never said anything to you, and I realized that there a lot of times when I may be thinking or feeling something but don't get a chance to tell you; this is our chance. I'll write in the book and leave it on your night stand, and when you write back, you leave it on mine. We can only write positive and loving messages in this book though."
Now mind you, this is coming from my husband of, at that time, 3 years, who is also a cop. Fun and loving, but not the most emotional guy in the world. I broke down and cried in the store. I couldn't believe that my husband had the wherewithall to come up with this simple, sweet, but hugely validating concept.
Now I can't tell you in a public forum what all we did when we got back home that night, but I will say, that he wrote me that night, and we've been writing back and forth ever since. We will celebrate 8 years of marriage this summer.
It was late at night

Just the two of us...
Secluded on a desolate beach
sand between our toes
nothing holding either of us back
Just the two of us...
Nothing between our skin
that will cause any friction
just our desires, needs, and wants.
Just the two of us...
happy and in love.
